Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Isabel’s Spanish audio.

Excellent. Podcast Gumbo has gone International!

I was so excited that Isabel agreed to be a guest so I could test out how well my 9th and 10th grade Spanish classes have held up all these years. So let’s see how well I can translate what Isabel said. Here we go:

Hi Paul, it’s Isabel. Today is September 22nd, and here in Madrid, like in the rest of the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the autumnal equinox. I get very sad when the summer ends, and that’s why I want you to recommend me a podcast that can give me hope to endure the days that get shorter, the days that get colder. Please, make me believe there’s life beyond Summer. Thanks, Paul

How did I do? Ok, truth be told. I cheated. I asked Isabel to translate what she said and I just read that back. My teacher, Ms. Manzilla would not be proud.

For my first recommendation, I found an Ologies minisode with Alie Ward. In it, Alie suggests a fictitious word that she thinks should be a word. Aestaology. (I-East-a-ology.) In the episode, she talks about things we associate with summer. Fireflies. Watermelon. Barbecues. And peeing in pools. So if the autumnal equinox gets you down, grill up something on the barbie, track down some hollow watermelon and post a few pics using the Autumnal Equinox hashtag.

Today’s guest is Isabel Cadenas Cañón. Isabel is the host of the De eso no se habla podcast. De eso se no habla is a narrative non-fiction podcast that tries to connect the dots between personal and collective silences.

The big news is that the podcast just dropped this week so you can listen right from the get go.

For our third recommendation, Isabel recommends The Magic Carpet Flight Manual podcast. Isabel says, and I quote “The podcast I’d like to recommend is Cathy Fitzgerald’s The Magic Carpet Flight Manual. I like this story because Cathy’s delicacy in writing and tracking is as magic as the flying carpet itself.” Unquote.

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I’m going to say that the one Spanish word that I’ll never forget is limpiaparabrisas. Don’t ask me why because I’ve never had a reason to use it ever since learning it. It means windshield wiper.

Come back on September 26th for something very public.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
