Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hey Paul, Jon Gay aka JAG here wishing you a very happy Bald Is Beautiful Day. I have to turn this off because I actually use a Mach 3 to shave my head and I’ve been doing that since 2006 when I was 25. But it just doesn’t sound as good as an electric into a microphone. Hoping you have some podcast ideas around Bald Is Beautiful because just remember, god only made a few perfect heads. On the rest, he put hair.

Ha. I always hope to get some sound effects from my guests but I’ll say that an electric razor is the funniest one to date, Jon.

Today is September 13th and for my first recommendation, I’m going a little off the board here. I honestly did spend some time listening to a few episodes related to hair loss but none that I would force my listeners to suffer through.

Instead, I found a podcast made by a youngster named Grady who makes The Grady (and Leo the Lion) Podcast. Grady shares some interesting facts about animals. What does this have to do with Bald Is Beautiful Day, you ask? Well, in this episode, he talks about a beautiful bird known as the Bald Eagle. Did you know the Bald Eagle makes the biggest nest of any bird? Me neither. Listen in for a short two and a half minutes to get nine other facts. And then you can talk about it using the National Bald Is Beautiful Day hashtag even though it wasn’t the true intent of the hashtag.

My guest today is Jon Gay. When I reached out to Jon about being a guest, it made me a bit sad. I met Jon at Podcast Movement in 2018 and then again last year. But with no in-person event this year, we wouldn’t be able to catch up, face to face.

Jon’s podcast is called the JAG Show, which is focused around podcasts. He has short weekly episodes and then mixes in longer form interviews with industry people.

In this episode, he interviews Rob Greenlee of the newly formed Podcast Academy. They talk about the industry and then give details about the Academy which a lot of us are curious about. In fact, this episode reminded me to join the Academy as soon as I finish recording.

For our last recommendation, Jon comes back with a fellow bald man, Matt Cundill, who hosts The Soundoff Podcast. Matt did a lengthy interview with Boston legend Mistress Carrie about her departure from WAAF and her venture into podcasting.

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I’ll let you know that I’ve been going to the same barber since high school even after moving 4 hours away. But due to the pandemic, my nephew is now cutting my hair. His real job? Corporate advertising.

Come back on September 22nd if you prefer summer over fall.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
