Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hi Paul, this is Reva. The other day, I was in the park with a friend of mine and I happened to see from a distance of not really that close, that when they unlocked their iPhone, the password was as follows: 111111. I don’t think I’m making it quite that easy but I’m sure all my devices are vulnerable to hacking too. So for anyone who might need it, would you please recommend a good podcast episode for computer security day?

Today is November 30th and as Reva said, it’s Computer Security Day. I will admit to caring about computer security more than any of my friends and family. They just tune me out when I talk about it. Am I perfect about it? No. And I don’t think there is a way to be perfect but there are ways that can help. A password manager is a good place to start.

For our first recommendationS, I’m going to give you the technical and the fun.

The Lock and Code podcast has an episode where they discuss secure passwords, password alternatives, and maybe the death of passwords. So that’s the technical.

For the fun, I don’t have to go any further than one of my favorite podcasts – Darknet Diaries. In this two parter, we hear from Manfred who hacked a gaming platform for fun and then for profit.

If you listen to either of these podcasts, or both, let us know by sharing it with the Computer Security Day hashtag.

Today’s guest is Reva Goldberg, producer of the Amended podcast.

This year marks the centennial of the 19th Amendment. For those of you who need some help, this Amendment is where women were finally given the right to vote. Where I thought there’s a lot to learn about the 1st Amendment, little did I know that there is so much about the 19th Amendment that most people don’t know because the full story has never been told to us. And that’s where the Amended podcast comes in. It’s a great short series from Humanities New York.

For our third recommendation, Reva says, and I quote:

“I recently rediscovered this episode of Hidden Brain that I find particularly satisfying as someone who loves thinking about how storytelling works with our brains (and someone who loves 90s movies). The clips of kids being surprised by movie endings are delightful.

Warning: it features a couple movie plot spoilers, and the voice of the now-creepier-than-we-thought Kevin Spacey, in clips from The Usual Suspects.”

Unquote.

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I consider The Usual Suspects a nine out of 10 but damn that Spacey guy.

Go back on December 8th for our next episode. Yes, I said that correctly.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
