Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hey Paul, it’s Paul. Did you know that today is National Limerick Day and National Odometer Day? It’s also International Hummus Day and International Nurses Day. So get your act together and give me a bunch of recommendations!

Wow, not only does my guest today have the same first name as me but he’s my vocal doppelgänger. And honestly, a bully as well. What is going on?

What’s going on is that it’s Giving Tuesday, podcast edition, where podcasters drop a bonus episode of podcast recommendations. So that’s what I’m here to do because I’m generous like that and I’m avoiding a large stack of unwashed dishes.

So let’s get started.

For Limerick Day, I learned about Edward Lear. Edward Lear is known for his literary nonsense and for making limericks popular. The Lit2Go website has a small audio collection of poems and limericks by Lear. What do you think happened with the Old Man with a Beard?

For Odometer Day, I’ve got something that is going to make your brain explode. This comes from Wes Carroll’s Puzzler podcast and this episode relates to a faulty odometer. How many of you math wizards want to take a crack at it? If you are able to figure it out, let me know because that means you are MUCH smarter than I am.

For Hummus Day, we get a brief history of hummus from the Food in Five podcast. Did you know that hummus means chick pea in Arabic? I knew to make hummus you use chick peas but I didn’t know the meaning of the word. So instead of standing against the wall at the next party I attend, I’m going to be the life of it when I throw out that little trivia gem.

Finally, for Nurses Day, I’m not recommending an episode. Instead, I just want to thank all the nurses out there doing all that critical work, not just during this terrible time but all the time.

You can find more podcast recommendations using the Giving Tuesday Podcasts hashtag. While you are at it, why not celebrate giving and generosity yourself, any time this month?

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I’ll just say that we’ll return to our regular scheduled programming on May 15th.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
