Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hey, Paul. This is also Paul. The lucky winner of the much talked about first ever Podcast Gumbo listener contest. Still pinching myself. Anyway, today is National Dive Bar Day. And I guess I could pretend for all the rest of your listeners that we both don’t already know quite a bit about this topic but hey, who would I really be fooling, right? But ok, I’ll play along. Please enlighten me and others about the so-called dive bars. Thanks and as always, the first round’s on you.

As Paul said, he is the winner of a contest so he is now a guest on my show. If listeners don’t know, all my guests are people I’ve met and hung out in person with at least once. With this contest, I relaxed that rule but as dumb luck would have it by a hat pick, he won – a person that I have hung out in a lot of bars with for many years.

It is apropos that today is National Dive Bar Day because I’ve been in my fair share of them. But I’ll throw this out to my guest, would the Ale ’n ‘Wich be considered a dive bar?

For today’s main recommendation, I found an episode called Are Dive Bars an Endangered Species? By the Life Behind Bars podcast. In this episode, the hosts discuss the origins and the state of dive bars and if they are becoming extinct. I, for one, would be sad if that were the case and we were forced to happy hour at TGIF’s.

Today’s guest is Paul Orefice. Paul does not have a podcast so there, you now know one person in this world that doesn’t have one. However, he does write the Music Matters Much newsletter where he talks about all things music. But the one constant is that he always includes a podcast episode about music in the newsletter. What I can say is that Paul has had the most influence on my musical listening habits than anything or anyone else. He told me about Wilco back in the 90’s.

Paul’s recommended podcast is all about music, of course. He recommends the God Only Knows episode from the Strong Songs podcast. Truth be told, if you like that episode, you can thank me because I’m the one who raved about that podcast to him.

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I’m going to give you another podcast recommendation. Since Paul doesn’t have his own podcast, you were short-changed there. So I’m going to give you one of my favorite music-related episodes ever – the Fleetwood Mac episode from Song Exploder. Band member Lindsey Buckingham gives you a long history of the iconic hit, Go Your Own Way.

So that’s it. Will I have another contest after this debacle? We shall see.

Come back on July 11th for another music-inspired episode.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
