Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hey Paul, it’s Claude Call here with a little story. When I was growing up on Long Island, the local 7-Eleven store was pretty much the place for teenagers to hang out. That was our cultural center. Later on, I worked in a 7-Eleven to help to help pay for college. Here’s a secret they told us. If you burn a coffee pot, put some slurpee in there and swirl it around. It will come out like magic so it’s probably not a coincidence that my wedding anniversary is July 11th, which is, go figure, National 7-Eleven Day. What can you tell us about 7-Eleven Day?

First off, let’s all give Claude a congrats since today is his anniversary.

Secondly, should anyone that has ever had a 7-Eleven slurpee be worried that it can be used as a cleanser? Of course, if you’re eating a hot dog with it, I think it’s the least of your worries.

If you haven’t figured it out, today is National 7-Eleven Day because today is July 11th. 7-11. Just some audio handholding for some of you a little slow on the take this morning.

For today’s main recommendation, I found an episode from the Authentic Influence podcast where they interview Marissa Jarratt, the Chief Marketing Officer of 7-Eleven. Do you have any clue how large this chain is? They have over 70,000 stores globally. I can’t even fathom that. In fact, it’s the world’s largest convenience brand.

Today’s guest is Claude Call, host of the How Good It Is music podcast. I’m a fan of the show because a) it’s about music, b) Claude and I seem to have similar tastes in music, and c) the episodes are usually less than 20 mins long. I was going to recommend the Bruce Springsteen Born to Run episode but Claude just dropped a fun episode about R.E.M.’s hit, What’s the Frequency, Kenneth? It gives some follow up to the crazy story about where the song name came from that I didn’t know about.

For our last recommendation, Claude recommends the What Happened to the McFlurry? episode from Underunderstood. Claude says that even though he’s not sure if it’s his favorite episode, there’s a little audience participation added to it which makes it a little more fun.

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I’m going to publicly ask Claude to do an episode on any 10,000 Maniacs or Barenaked Ladies song.

Come on back on July 15th to learn about worms. The good kind.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
