Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hi Paul, this is Lori and I hear that January 3rd is National Fruitcake Toss Day. I assume by fruitcake they are referring to the inedible lumps of unholy that people give to one another at the holidays. Please, fill me in. What is National Fruitcake Toss Day?

Seriously, Lori? This is how I’m introducing my new podcast to the world?

So here goes nothing.

If you’re like me and you’ve received one of those cakes recently, you’re probably using it as a door stop. But what do you do with it once the holidays are over? As Lori said, January 3rd is National Fruitcake Toss Day.

So today, call up your friends and go have a Fruitcake Toss contest to see who can throw their forbidden fruit..cake the furthest. That’s right, that’s how you observe this day.

And we all know that something isn’t real until it has its own hashtag and sure enough this does. So go take some pics of your tossing contest and use #fruitcaketossday.

Now, about that recommendation.

As luck would have it, one of my favorite podcasts has an episode about fruitcakes. The Story Behind, which tells the extraordinary history of the ordinary in short 5-10 minute episodes, talks about Christmas Traditions which obviously includes everyone’s favorite mold of bread.

In their show notes, they also have a LONG list of fruitcake resources that you didn’t realize you wanted.

So right after this, go learn all about that thing we all know and love as the fruitcake.

Today’s challenge comes from my friend, Lori Mortimer, the host of the Mementos podcast. Mementos is a podcast about people and their cherished possessions. Take a listen to her trailer as it sets up the scenario for you to figure out what you truly cherish and what you should KonMari. And before you ask, no relation.

For today’s final recommendation, one of Lori’s favorite episodes ever is Between the Ears’ Jump Blue. If you’re smart, you’ll take her word for it.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
