Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hey Paul. How goes it? Big fan of the show. This is your fellow newsletter buddy, Arielle Nissenblatt. I really want to know more about National Veggie Burger Day. Will you please enlighten me so that I can properly celebrate this joyous day? At least I think it should be a joyous day. Let me know. Thank you!

I have to admit Arielle, a few years ago, I would not have celebrated this day. A long time ago, my friend used to make turkey burgers which I despised. Turkey was not for burgers. Veggies, beans and grains? Definitely not a burger. I would’ve clogged my ears with bigger earbuds if you came at me with that suggestion.

But the landscape has changed significantly. Early last year, I had an Impossible Burger out of curiosity and I was stunned how much I liked it. Was it just like a meat burger? No. But it was darn close and I have had them again.

So today, June 5th, I’m celebrating by having a veggie burger and I’ll tweet about it using the Veggie Burger Day hashtag.

For today’s recommendation, I’m recommending an episode from Today, Explained called Bovine Intervention. It’s from a year ago and they talk about Burger King’s announcement about creating a meatless Whopper. They also talk about other restaurant chains doing the same as well and if a veggie burger is healthier for you.

Today’s guest is Arielle Nissenblatt. Arielle writes the weekly EarBuds Podcast Collective newsletter which has 5 podcast recommendations based on a theme. She is also the host of the Feedback with EarBuds podcast which gives a rundown of the week’s newsletter and also includes some industry news from Inside Podcasting.

As a side note, last year, Arielle and I collaborated on Share Your Buds Sunday, in which we encouraged podcast fans to show their non-pod-listening friends and family how to listen to a podcast.

For our last recommendation, Arielle recommends Mob Queens episode 1: Who is Anna Genovese? For those that don’t know, Anna Genovese is the wife of mobster Vito Genovese. The show talks about how Anna rose from nothing to being a mob queen.

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I’m giving you the inside scoop that I just realized that I’m going back to back to back with podcast newsletter writers with podcasts. Come on back on June 12th for a little bit of loving.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
