Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hey Paul, it’s Julian. So I grew up observing Sweden’s pancake day with my family and there were so many good food days to choose from this week. I mean, National Lasagna Day, Avocado Day, Chocolate Chip Cookies Day, Watermelon Day. I thinks about it and Ice Screamed Sandwhich one to choose, you know? Well, it’s summer in New York so what can you tell me about National Ice Cream Sandwich Day? I just learned they were invented here. Stay cool.

Why doesn’t this surprise me, Julian? Back on June 20th, Catherine O’Brien challenged me to find an episode related to ice cream soda, which I admittedly kinda failed at. But the difference between soda and sandwich made all the difference.

Hankering for some ice cream now? It’s like an ear worm, isn’t it?

Speaking of ear worms, I’m going to give some early Extra Hot Sauce right now. Many years ago, I edited a short film and it included an ice cream truck. You can’t fathom how many times I heard that iconic ice cream truck song.

So today, August 2nd, take a quick run to the store and get yourself a box of ice cream sandwiches and let us know if you ate the entire box by using the Ice Cream Sandwich Day hashtag on social media. No judgement if you did.

For today’s related recommendation, I give you an episode from the Spilled Milk podcast where they talk about, yes, ice cream sandwiches. Did you know the original sandwich was sold in New York? Julian just found out. You can learn more facts while listening to the hosts eat through a few different brands. Most notably, they surprisingly eat my favorite ice cream ever. The brand initials are T and J. Can you guess what they are?

Today’s guest is Julian Weller. He is a Supervising Producer of Podcasts at iHeartMedia. A new podcast he just launched is called Forgotten: Women of Juárez which covers the story of hundreds of women that have gone missing from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Some of the women that have been found have strange symbols carved on their bodies. The series investigates theories about what or who is responsible.

For our third recommendation, Julian writes, and I quote: “I just started listening to a brand new show from Nichole Hill. She’s making The Secret Adventures of Black People, ‘stories about Black folks holding it down across space and time.’ It’s the right kind of simple, playful storytelling, with bits of fantasy woven in, and beautiful to listen to. I love the blend, and Nichole came out swinging! I recommend her first episode, which juxtaposes her aunt’s fairytale romance with Nichole’s experience with dating apps.” Unquote.

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I’m going to give you a bonus. Last year, after meeting Julian, I listened to a fantastic episode from another podcast he produced called Sleepwalkers. The episode called Truth to Power will enlighten you to A.I.-doctored deep fakes which should scare all of us.

My next episode drops on August 8th and we’re talking more food. But be forewarned, it’s the healthy kind.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
