My Crazy Podcast Pitch Experiment

Update: 10/31/22 – Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Effective today, I will not be scheduling any more chats. Could I have another creative brainstorm in the future? I would not bet against it. But I would say that is much later than sooner. At some point, I will write about this wonderful experience.

Pre-pandemic, I LOVED going to podcast events where I could connect with so many people. At Podcast Movement 2019, including the panel I was on, I attended only 3 sessions because even as an ISFJ, I wanted to meet and talk to people instead. And through these introductions, I have made multiple friends. Unfortunately, due to my personal situation, I have made the decision not to attend large events of any kind until I feel I can keep my family safe, which robs me of all that fun.

At these events, I would meet many podcasters who would tell me about their show. So how could I hear from podcasters in a more personal, connected way than tweets and emails?

My crazy pitch experiment.

I want you to tell me about your podcast face to face, virtually. I want to meet the person behind the pitch and show. Twitter icons and cover art be damned. Let’s have fun. That’s it.

So how does this work?

  1. Click on this link which will allow you to schedule a 7-minute video chat.
  2. After your session is confirmed, please set up a virtual call using your platform of choice. Yes, I fully realize I’m making you do work here but this idea will fail if I have to do it all. Send the invite to Paul {at} PodcastGumbo.com. (Allot 15 mins for the virtual call to give us some leeway if we have issues.)
  3. Subscribe to my newsletter. (You wouldn’t want to miss my recommendation if I write about your podcast, would you?)
  4. Prepare for our chat as much or as little as you want. (This will be casual but consider it a good opportunity for you to dazzle me with a good pitch.)
  5. Show up for our chat (fully clothed)

Key notes:

  • Due to overwhelming demand and because I’m a kind person, I have created an email list you can subscribe to below so you are alerted when new slots open up. I’ll typically send an email once a week (but at most twice a week if my schedule allows).
  • You MUST have at least 3 episodes in your feed. (I need options if you are NOT serial-based.) A trailer is strongly recommended but not necessary. Hear a playlist of those that came before you.
  • One chat per podcast. You could try to be sneaky but that will fail quickly.
  • For posterity sake, I will ask to take a screenshot of our chat. I won’t post it anywhere and you can always opt out.
  • If you don’t want to talk, you can subscribe to my newsletter and reply to one of those. I will no longer be taking pitches via twitter.
  • I reserve the right to drop this idea in my bidet-less toilet at any time.

Podcast Friends

For all of you who I have met, shared laughs over a beer, taken selfies with, please know that I can’t wait til we can do it again in real life. But in the interim, if you are up for a chat, I’m all in. And don’t worry, I won’t hang up at the 7th minute. Just email me and we’ll get it done unless I email you first. If you don’t have my email, then were we really friends?
