Hey. This is Paul Kondo. This is the Podcast Gumbo podcast and I’ve got a rhetorical question for ya.

Are you like me and find those things we call National Days, like Cheeseball Day or worse, Moldy Cheese Day, amusing? Yeah, me too. So each week, I’ll have one of my podcast friends challenge me to find an episode related to one of those days and I’ll be releasing it on the actual day it occurs.

So, let’s get to it. What is today’s National Day?

Hey Paul. This is Adela Mizrachi. Today, March 25th is National Manatee Appreciation Day. I can not wait to hear what you’ve got for us on this elephants of the sea day.

I honestly have no idea how to reply to that, Adela. I know nothing about manatees so I can’t even make a joke about them. And my book club has never talked about these strange creatures.

Who am I kidding? Read? Not for me. But I’ve got some mad web searching skills so I’ve tracked down an episode related to the manatee and learned a few things.

Today’s first recommendation comes from the After The Fact podcast and it’s called Scientists at Work: The Secret Life of Manatees.

When I listened I found out that I inadvertently lied to you at the end of my previous episode. I called the manatee an herbivore which is a common mistake. As it turns out, scientists have found manatees in other areas not local to Florida that aren’t herbivores. What?! Who knew? Well, now you do, thanks to me.

One way to appreciate everyone’s favorite lawn mower of the sea is by donating to a conservation program and using the Manatee Appreciation Day hashtag.

Today’s guest is Adela Mizrachi, host of the Podcast Brunch Club podcast. I’ll give you an episode of hers but her podcast is not what’s important here.

Adela is the founder of Podcast Brunch Club, which is like book club but for podcasts. The way it works is that there is a listening list provided at the beginning of the month and then local clubs have their meetings. EXACTLY like a book club.

Currently, there are over 70 clubs worldwide. If there isn’t a club in your area, start one! Or, you can join the virtual Podcast Brunch Club.

Now, since I’m required by law to recommend 3 podcast episodes each week, I’ll give you this one from the Podcast Brunch Club podcast.

The latest episode is an interview with Heather Welch, whose club curated a recent list on nuclear power. Heather explains that she lives off the grid and what that means. I also found out that New Zealand has never had nuclear power.

As a side note, if you’ve never been to New Zealand, I can’t recommend it enough. Unless, of course, you live on the east coast of the United States and you have a fear of flying.

Finally, for our third recommendation, Adela recommends the We Share the Same Sky podcast. It’s a serial so she recommends the first episode entitled Like An Oak Tree. It’s a story of a young photojournalist who follows in the footsteps of her grandmother when she fled the Nazis during WWII. Adela says that it weaves the past and the present together into a beautiful story.

For today’s Extra Hot Sauce, I just want to say there’s nothing more the manatees appreciate than you telling your friends about my podcast. And make sure you come back on April 4th for National Walk Around Things Day.

As always, take a look at the show notes for links to all the podcasts mentioned in this episode as well as other life-altering information. To make it easy for you, there’s also a link to a podcast playlist that will contain all the episodes ever mentioned in this show.

See you next week sometime for another round of recommendations.
